Garbiñe Muguruza emerged as the first Spanish winner of the WTA Finals in Singapore after powering to a 6-3 6-2 victory over Johanna Konta on Sunday.

The former Wimbledon champion won her opener but then lost the next two matches without taking a set, but against Konta her form at the start of the tournament was clear.

Muguruza, 25, won 11 of the first 14 points of the first set but faltered after a break in the eighth game which saw her drop serve for the first time.

A similar fate followed in the second set and the world number one found herself two breaks behind after 36 minutes, before the Spaniard finally found her groove to record the big win on the Singapore hard courts.

Muguruza was joined on the winners’ podium in Singapore by Simona Halep, who beat Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-3 in the semi-finals.
