Here is everything you need to know about the apartment Glenda Bowen calls her ‘haves and have-nots’

Glenda Bowen, a former Green Girl, Vanity Fair contributor and current ” ‘This American Life’ correspondent,” joined the show “Planet Money” on Monday to answer some real-world questions. The short exchange below, in which Bowen discusses her home is a charming and sweet example of how to lead a good life.

Here is all you need to know about her abode:

At what age did you realize that you wanted to live like this?

I bought my apartment in Brooklyn in 2007. I was 39 at the time. The neighborhood was experiencing a lot of gentrification and, as anybody who lives in that neighborhood will know, it does not have the best of reputations. We live in what I think of as the haves and have-nots. We all have to fight for our very limited space.

How much space does the apartment have?

There is more than 10,000 square feet.

If you could change one thing about the apartment, what would it be?

My kitchen, which is kind of an underwhelming space.

Do you have a playlist when you cook? If so, what’s on it?

Frank Ocean and Flo Rida. It’s a constant stream, but we generally go off the radio (it’s fairly free-form). If I’m in a mood for a specific song, I’ll find it somewhere, usually at the bottom of the iPod, in the “iPod Browsing” section.

Do you have a food dating ritual? If so, what’s the one thing about cooking that you love?

I cook breakfast for my three dogs every morning, and then let them run around the apartment freely. I must be crazy! (That’s why we call it the “pre-breakfast”.) All three dogs love to eat fresh, homemade dog food — super snappy dry dog food.

Can you personally point out one thing about the apartment that is an utter disaster?

Our wonderful dog dumps everything out of its mouth. This happens when he’s excited or just stressed. We clean the poop up immediately. It washes down the stairs. It will follow us around all day and the smell hangs in the air. My husband, though, claims to get more exercise cleaning up the dog poop.

When you’re cleaning, do you have a favorite color or sort of a favorite kind of puddle to clean?

At home, I try to keep things tidy. (My husband does not agree. The poo monster puddle under my apartment stairwell is where he would prefer to stick to.)

If you had to eat the best thing to have for dinner, what would it be?

The best meal I ever had was turkey chili at a restaurant with my family in San Diego. It was just fantastic. The two of us all cried because we were so full of nostalgia. It was special, and it was left out for hours!

What are the best things about your apartment?

It’s very shareable. We are all a bunch of cats with fur. Also, there is a lot of artwork, because I like art.

Also, my apartment is completely messy and messy, so there are daily ups and downs. There are a lot of little things that are wonderful. We are a community of special animals. Our apartment reflects a community.
