Joseph McKnight, indicted in Kansas City ‘hoodrat murder, found guilty

Former Kansas City Chiefs running back Joseph McKnight was convicted Thursday of murdering Kansas Citian Steve Vonderheide by beating the 27-year-old with a tire iron in October 2015. After the verdict was announced by a Missouri state jury, a video was played detailing how the group of Kansas City men who were found guilty of the attack found out about Mr. Vonderheide’s vehicle and were able to corner him. Judge Jeff Bledsoe ordered that two accomplices charged with aggravated assault for stopping the other three and a woman outside the victim’s car after they saw the discarded keys leave, be tried separately. The verdict is the latest development in a case that gained national attention in the wake of numerous videos of urban crimes posted to social media. “In my 40 years of being a prosecutor, I’ve never had a case where as many cameras were around a case,” Rich Ortiz, who represented Mr. McKnight, told reporters Thursday. “Hopefully, in the future, this won’t be an issue.”
