Waterville Golf Club: Why did Charlie Chaplin go to this resort every year?

A couple driving to a Christmas party have been asked to leave a golf club because they believe the driver drove at too fast. A Honda Accord was seen travelling at 142 miles per hour on a road with a 25mph limit, seen from Waterville Golf Club’s car park.

The club now asks members to stop using it if they do not feel comfortable with the speed limit as it is two miles from the main road.

Dulux, the manufacturer of paint used in the cars, has asked 2,500 members to end their annual Christmas membership at the Essex golf club in Waterville, near Southend, because of its narrow driveway.

Phil Jackson, a former professional golfer, said the car had shown “such a disregard for the area of Waterville that they have to take action and make everybody aware of it.”

John Gladstone, club captain, said: “This is as close as we will get to us becoming the snail on a wheel.”
