The world’s best bars are set to be announced next month – and they are based not in New York City, but Copenhagen.

The Danish capital and one of its residents, eight-time Guinness World Record holder Bob Johnston, have been named in the ninth edition of TripAdvisor’s TripBest awards.

They beat 25 other cities, plus Prague and New York’s SoHo district.

The awards are “the most comprehensive collection of recommendations on bars and restaurants from more than 50 million travellers across the globe”.

The list is weighted toward feedback from travellers who have visited over the past year.

They will also be voted on by members of the TripAdvisor community.

Readers of the travel site considered more than 10,000 bars and 52,000 restaurants.

Copenhagen tops the list of the five best-rated cities for 2019, but it has lost the world’s best bar crown.

In 2017, the Danish city had 84% of the votes of Travellers’ Choice voters and three bars in the top five. This year, it won three points and no bars in the top five.

But the city retains the title of the world’s best-rated city for 2018, with 94% of travellers’ votes cast.

Readers have recommended 21 bars in Copenhagen in the latest rankings. Among them are the Coldroom Bar, Dobensbar Castle Bar and the No Man’s Bar, the latter featuring and all situated within the Old Market Square.

The top five clubs to visit in the city were also named:
