Marco’s was a long-established establishment in London’s Camden borough, run by Robert Gillespie and Simon Morris

A Michelin-starred London restaurant has been destroyed by a blaze that has put out for good on Sunday.

Marco’s in Camden, which opened in 1962, is understood to have burned down early on Sunday morning after an early morning fire that started in the basement kitchen and spread to the roof, local media said.

The Camden news website reported that firefighters had contained the fire and were still putting out small hotspots.

The huge blaze knocked out electricity to the building in north London and the Metropolitan police said fire services were called at 5.25am on Sunday.

Marco’s, originally named Marco’s Apartment, had been in the property at 41 Summerhill Street, in Camden, a historic part of London, for about 10 years.

Marco’s was run by Marco Postiglione and Simon Morris. The restaurant had been awarded a Michelin star in 2014.

Last year, Postiglione said he was looking forward to the restaurant being refurbished for its 40th anniversary. He said plans were underway to put Marco’s on a sound footing as a multi-use property.

The restaurant was established by Postiglione in 1961 and continues to be run by his brother, Roland.

Marco’s became famous for its almost instant spaghetti carbonara cooked in meatballs.

Apostolate vicar Leo Bolan said there was a very tight community in the area and had heard that many people were injured by the fire.

“The whole area is really affected and we will be offering support to those whose homes have been damaged by the fire,” he said.

Former London mayor Boris Johnson tweeted: “As sad as the loss of Marco’s is, I will be very grateful if more does not get lost in the conflagration.”

The London fire brigade said four fire engines attended the scene and the fire was not being controlled at 11am.

The British Transport Police said: “Around 5.25am London Fire Brigade were called to reports of a large fire at 41 Summerhill Street in Camden, NW1.”
